How Much Temperature Optical Fiber Can Withstand?
Is the optical fiber afraid of high temperature? Different types of optical fiber cable have upper limits. The operating temperature of standard optical fiber network cables is -40 °C ~ 75 °C.
If it is an optical fiber cable used in industry, the composition of each optical fiber cable is different, and the high and low temperatures it can withstand are different, so you need to consult the manufacturer for details.

Fiber Optic Temperature Regulation
The upper and lower limits of the working environment temperature of the optical cable temperature measurement system are usually -20 ℃ ~ 55 ℃.
Usually, the conventional high temperature resistant optical fiber is -20 ° ~ 300 ° for a long time and can reach 350 ° for a short time.
The working environment temperature of the distributed optical fiber temperature measurement system is -10 ℃ ~ 50 ℃. And the temperature measurement range is conventional temperature: -40-120 ℃; high temperature optical cable: -40-400 ℃.
The measurement temperature range of the fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor is -40 ℃ ~ 300 ℃.

How is the Optical Fiber Cable Affected by Temperature?
- The temperature characteristics of optical fiber refer to the effect of high and low temperature conditions on the optical fiber loss. Under low temperature conditions, the loss of optical fiber increases. This is due to the different expansion coefficients of the optical fiber coating, the overmolding layer and quartz. The thermal expansion coefficient of organic resins and plastics is much larger than that of quartz. It shrinks at low temperatures and stretches at high temperatures. Under the action of this axial compression force, microbending will increase the loss. If it works at low temperatures, as the temperature continues to decrease, the fiber loss will continue to increase. When the temperature drops to about -55 °C, the loss increases sharply, making the system unable to operate normally.
- The microbending loss of fiber optic due to temperature changes caused by thermal expansion and contraction. It known in physics that the thermal expansion coefficient of silicon dioxide (SiO2) that constitutes the optical fiber is very small. And it hardly shrinks when the temperature drops. In the process of forming the cable, the optical fiber must coated. And some other components must added. The expansion coefficients of the coating material and other components are relatively large. When the temperature drops, the shrinkage is more serious. So when the temperature changes, the expansion coefficient of the material is different. Which will cause the fiber optic to bend slightly, especially in low temperature areas.
